Business models and supply chains have changed in ways unimaginable a decade ago.  Due to challenging economic conditions, companies are focused on reducing costs by extending supply chains into low-cost jurisdictions and pursuing scale and scope economies by moving toward more centralized global business models.

Companies are expanding into emerging markets in search of growth, as the developed economies lag behind.  In addition, new business models are being developed to deliver innovative new products and services not in existence just a few years ago.  As a result, strategies for funding, owning, and deploying intangible property (IP) are often outdated and misaligned with current business strategy, objectives ,and future outlook.

Thoughtfully aligning your company's IP development and commercialization strategies with the current business environment may be more financially and operationally efficient and materially improve overall profitability.

Companies from a number of industries, including biotechnology, software, consumer products, and automotive, are currently addressing their IP strategy in a number of ways.  IP alignment opportunities have resulted - from integrating IP-rich acquisitions into existing supply chains and IP ownership structures to examining IP strategy with respect to information technology transformation (cloud computing) growth, to rationalizing dispersed IP ownership.

He holds a proven track record of successful business leadership and developing leading brands in the medical aesthetics arena. Mr. Rhatigan spent the last 17 years at Allergan, Inc., where he most recently served as SVP, GM and Chief Executive of SkinMedica®, Inc. In this position, Mr. Rhatigan was responsible for the integration of SkinMedica into Allergan, Inc. and led all aspects of the global SkinMedica business, including research and development, commercialization, manufacturing and operations. Prior to this role, Mr. Rhatigan served as Senior Vice President of Allergan, Inc.'s Facial Aesthetic business, where he led the launches and marketplace success of BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM® and LATISSE® in the United States. Under his leadership, Allergan's Facial Aesthetics business received the highest customer satisfaction rating in medical aesthetics for seven consecutive years. Prior to Allergan, Mr. Rhatigan spent nine years at Procter and Gamble in a variety of roles of increasing responsibility in sales and marketing.

Tony Sine - Executive Vice President, Alphaeon
Mr. Sine, Executive Vice President at ALPHAEON, leads our mergers, acquisitions, licensing, and partnerships practice. From 2010 to 2012, Mr. Sine headed business development for Bausch+Lomb's surgical division completing more than seven deals in two years on three continents worth more than $600 million (including milestones). Working closely with B+L's private equity owner, Warburg Pincus, these deals reinvigorated B+L's worldwide product offering, pipeline, and international partners.  Prior to B+L, Mr. Sine spent more than four years at Allergan from 2006 to 2010, first as divisional counsel and an integration lead to the then newly-created Allergan Medical, following the named acquisition.

She first joined Allergan in 1987 as a sales representative for the Optical Division in Canada, after being attracted by the opportunity to use her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology in the context of a competitive sales environment. Since then, her path has included numerous product launches, ten promotions, and assignments in Canada, Southern California, and the United Kingdom. In her current role with the company, Lynn is establishing Allergan's sales and marketing presence in a new therapeutic area with high unmet need - Urologics - as the company develops a treatment portfolio that addresses the continuum of care for overactive bladder and other genitourinary disorders.

Chris Zachery - Professor & Chair Department of Dermatology, UC Irvine

His ability to critique has drawn some ire, but so far his humor and English accent have saved him from his detractors. His interest in lasers has led to considerable industry supported research in optimal systems for cutaneous laser surgery.

Monetizing Mobile

Mobile is exploding. Over 100 million people in the US have smartphones, consumers are spending over 60 minutes a day consuming media on these devices, and people glance at their phone about 40 times a day. That is a massive and very active user base. Analysts estimate that app-related revenues reached $25 billion last year, on the way to more than $70 billion by 2017.

Google and Facebook have cracked the code, but clearly, building a sustainable business requires much more than building a popular service, web site, or application.  This panel brings together a group of application experts to explore the various ways to monetize mobile technologies.  From fee for service to subscription to in-app purchases, to advertising, to big data analytics.  All of the possible scenarios will be discussed.

If you are building a mobile software application, this panel will describe how to transform your product into a viable business.

Panelists:

  • Andrew Gerhart - COO, AerServ
  • David Glickaman - CEO, Ultra Mobile
  • Fred Thiel - Chairman of the Board and CEO, Local Corporation
  • Dave Yonamine - CEO, MobilityWare

Mobile Marketing

The marketing world has certainly changed in the last few years.  With consumers spending increasing amounts of time and attention on their mobile devices, mobile marketing has become the dominant vehicle to reach existing and potential customers.  Mobile marketing uses interactive wireless media to provide customers with time and location sensitive, personalized information that promotes goods, services and ideas, thereby generating value.

Businesses however are struggling with how to effectively allocate budgets and what mobile media is best suited for their target audience.

We have assembled a group of digital marketing gurus to share their secrets for reaching your audience, effectively allocating marketing dollars, and maximizing the value of your marketing spend.

Panelists:

  • Peter Bohenek - President, Rhythm Interactive
  • Frank Flores - CEO & Co-Founder, Moment M
  • Naushad Huda - CEO, XTOPOLY
  • Dave Swartz - co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer, MEDL Mobile and co-Founder &      President, Hang With, Inc.

Wearables

The hottest theme in mobile technology is the introduction of wearable gadgets that can track everything from seizures to how much sunlight you soak up. Device makers large and small attempt to make wearables that are both functional and fashionable.  We are surrounded by mobile technology, and it’s attaching to and engulfing our human form.  And we are far from even defining the possibilities.

The market for wearables will keep growing, buoyed by the impending arrival of the Apple Watch and other new gadgets. Convincing consumers to buy and use these devices will require a lot more work on design, technology miniaturization, and so-called killer apps—all likely to be major focus areas for wearable-gadget makers in the year ahead.

This panel will focus on the trends and opportunities associated with wearable technology highlighting the things we are likely to see in the coming months and innovations that will shape this sector in the future.

  • Tom Chun - VP of Strategy & Operations, Customer Development Organization, Samsung Electronics America
