We may be approaching the theoretical limits of Moore’s Law, but the technological advances in the semiconductor and information technology industries show no signs of slowing down – and Orange County is one of the most vibrant epicenters of innovation in the entire world.

The “Semiconductor” and “Information Technology” regional innovation clusters are responsible for thousands of jobs and countless innovations that have impacted the Orange County economy.  The dynamics of this industry segment are incredibly swift and accelerating.

At this event, partnered with global semiconductor and IT powerhouses Broadcom, Microsemi, The California Institute of Technology and Telecommunications, The Henry Samueli School of Engineering UCI and Experian, we will explore the emerging trends in this important vertical and identify the direction so that as innovators, we can anticipate change and create opportunity.

Join us with Microsemi CEO, Jim Peterson, Broadcom Vice President of Engineering Mehdi Hatamian, Experian President of Consumer Services, Guy Abramo, and Calit2 Director GP Li – along with two expert panels as we explore the changing landscape of microelectronics in Orange County and what we can do to be best prepared for the future.

Stronger supervision of assessment bodies, clearer rights/responsibilities for manufacturers and importers and a better coordination between EU-Commission and national surveillance authorities are among the future changes.

In addition to the new regulations, it’s also important to keep current on the best European areas to do business. Bavaria is one of the leading regions in Europe when it comes to research in medical technology and has extensive potential to consolidate this position. Many companies are rating the prospects for the future as positive – based on opportunities gleaned through new markets, a high level of innovation and the outstanding reputation of “Made in Bavaria” healthcare products.

Greg Hopkins - CEO, Hopkins Golf
It's safe to say that Greg loves golf. It's been his lifelong passion and profession. As a young man, Greg began his career as a golf pro in a golf course pro shop. From there he became a wannabe Tour pro on the mini-tours, created his own regional golf publication, and landed at Taylor Made's customer service department. He then moved up the company's ranks to sales rep, regional sales manager and eventually national sales manager. After a short stint running a golf grip company, Greg became president and eventually CEO of Cleveland Golf/Srixon, directing the company for 16 years and amassing nearly 300 PGA Tour wins under his watch. Over the past few years, Greg tried his hand on the Senior European Tour where he played in two senior majors, the Senior British Open at Turnberry, and Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill. He's had the time of his life playing inside the ropes. He's also a pilot, owns a small plane, and serves as the Hopkins Golf corporate pilot. We keep our meetings small.

OCTANe and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering (HSSoE) have formed a collaborative partnership in an effort to bring more small business innovation research grants to Orange County and the UCI campus. In addition to HSSoE, UCI participation includes faculty from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, and School of Physical Sciences.

This program will provide a combination of educational sessions and direct coaching and submission support to assist up to six start-up companies to target, create, and submit grant applications for small business innovative research funding and it is expected that a significant number of these will receive this non-dilutive funding.  The funding ultimately is used to build new companies, create jobs, and stimulate the economy.

We will kick off with an introductory seminar on April 16 2014, quickly followed by a “hands-on” workshop for all interested groups that are considering applying for an SBIR or STTR grant.  The aim is to select up to six companies that match well with the expertise available on campus for direct consulting support in targeted agencies and creating grant submissions for the 2014 grant cycle.

Agenda:

4:00 - 4:30pm  Registration and Networking

4:30 - 5:00       “The importance of SBIR’s to the Innovation Economy and the University of CA, Irvine.

5:00 - 5:20       Overview of SBIR/STTR Process and opportunities to secure research funding and

Research and development is vital to many industries.  A common misconception is that only traditional R&D activities and companies qualify to pursue this credit.  Any company devoting time and resources to creating new or innovative products; improving existing products; develops processes, patents, prototypes, or software; and hires designers or engineers qualifies.  Significant tax savings are out there.  We will explore eligible activities, documentation requirements, credit usability, and other considerations to help you better understand if your company may qualify.

Carolyn Driscoll - Senior Manager, Moss Adams
Carolyn has been providing research tax credit studies to companies claiming the credit since 2000. She spent ten years in the national R&D group of a Big 4 accounting firm and has significant experience assisting companies in increasing their R&D credit. Carolyn has extensive knowledge of the high-tech industry and is well versed in performing studies and implementing consulting projects in the following industries with great success: software, hardware, digital media, gaming and entertainment, semiconductors, medical devices, internet services, communication and mobile devices. Carolyn has successfully defended companies during federal IRS and state examinations. Carolyn is a member of the California Bar. Carolyn is also a member of the R&D Credit Coalition Technical Committee. She received her Bachelor of Arts from University of California, Santa Barbara, a Masters from California State University Fullerton, a Juris Doctorate from Southwestern University School of Law and her LLM from Chapman University School of Law.

Event Details:

Orange County is the single most technology rich epicenter for ophthalmology technology. The purpose of the Orange County Ophthalmology Technology Summit (OCOTS) meeting is to create a local forum where leading ophthalmology technologists, researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs can come together to discuss current industry trends, unmet clinical needs, and new business opportunities all to fuel the ophthalmology ecosystem in Orange County, California.

The meeting is sponsored by OCTANe and co-chaired by Dr. Bill Link, Managing Director of Versant Ventures; founder, chairman, and CEO of Chiron Corporation; and the founder and CEO of American Medical Optics (AMO). Our other co-chair is James V. Mazzo, Executive Chair of Acufocus, retired President of AMO. Jim is truly one of the most distinguished ophthalmology executives in Orange County. After 22 years at Allergan, Jim led the spin out of AMO from Allergan and successfully grew the company to more than $1.5 Billion and clear leadership in cataract, eye care, and refractive surgery. Jim is also co-founder of OCTANe, chairman of the UCI Foundation, and a trustee of Chapman University.

The plethora of ophthalmologic technologies that have been born and developed in Orange County by these co-chairs, along with the large group of executives that they have mentored in their respective organizations, is staggering and has shaped the vision world as we know it today.

At the same time, this field remains in a period of explosive technological growth. Huge unmet clinical needs remain and the rate of innovation continues to accelerate. From an entrepreneurial perspective, change brings opportunity.
