On Premise? Outsourced? Dedicated? Cloud? Harness the Power of “Hybrid” for a True “All-of-the-Above” Approach to IT Infrastructure

With so much focus on—and hype around—the cloud, we seem to have forgotten that for most businesses IT infrastructure remains a mix of on-premise, outsourced, physical and virtual components that must be optimized into a seamless hybrid environment. In this session we’ll look at how CIOs and CTOs are allocating workloads, applications and data across a diverse infrastructure today—using every tool in their arsenal in an effort to maximize legacy assets, optimize limited IT budgets and leverage technology advancements to make their business more effective and responsive.

We’ll examine how the role of the CIO and CTO has evolved and unpack the pitfalls, opportunities and imperatives for tomorrow. We’ll also look hard at the cloud—specifically the emergence of “cloud, your way” as a realistic, right-sized enhancement to existing IT environments—as opposed to the “rip and replace”,  complete cloud convergence that has been discussed for years.

"You never get a second chance to make a first impression". Your resume should give a powerful message about you and your experience. Devon & Devon will be hosting a "Lunch and Learn" program to assist you in building a resume that will grab the attention of your future employer. Come join us as we discuss tips and tricks to help you secure your next interview.

Bring your resume for a one on one consultation.

Karen Lustman, Director, Business Development, Devon & Devon

Karen joined Devon & Devon in September of 2004—bringing with her over 25 years of staffing industry experience. As Director of Business Development and a visionary at heart, Karen has always been interested in working with start up companies. Her experience with these new businesses has allowed her the opportunity to participate as a staffing resource in the growth and development of many of Orange County’s top employers.

As a staffing professional, Karen is committed to helping her clients reach their goals by finding the “perfect match”. Karen makes it her responsibility to fully understand the needs of her clients. Each hire is predicated not only by the skills and experience necessary to do the job, but a careful assessment of the profile, vision and mission of the company to ensure a symbiotic fit between the two.

As a Gold Level Sponsor of OCTANe, it is Karen’s belief that being a contributing member is essential to build a solid network of associates and businesses that will allow all of us to grow and prosper in Orange County. You can meet Karen and her team of award-winning recruiters at any of the OCTANe functions.

Karen enjoys showing her Champion Keeshonds, traveling to “any” beach with her husband, and writing. She is the author of “What’s Working” and “The Job Mob Blog.”

Karen Morris - Executive Recruiter, Devon & Devon
Karen made her first professional match when she entered Devon & Devon in 2004 and found that she absolutely loved the art of recruiting.  Responsible for both generating her own clients and candidates, she came to the realization that she had a true talent for working with candidates, getting to know them and helping them through the interviewing and hiring process.  This summer will mark her 9th year in recruiting, with the last four year being particularly well earned through the great recession.  She has followed her own advice, given frequently to her candidates, followed her passion and stayed with recruiting as it is what she does best and it gives her joy.
Karen has made hundreds of matches and currently works on many executive level positions for start up clients.  Orange County has become home to many of these types of companies as it has reinvented itself due to the every changing economic and technical climate.  Doors have closed to institutions that have been around for ages, replaced by starts ups in the Information Services and Clean Technology arenas. Karen will often work with the Founders and CEOs of these companies and has found her true niche, in helping these employers bring their passions to life by finding the right people to move their dreams forward. Karen has earned President's Club distinction twice and spends her "spare" time running half marathons and going on annual treks up Half Dome.  Mt. Whitney's summit  is in her sites for 2013.

Tara Micalizzi - Office Manager, Devon & Devon
Tara Micalizzi has been with Devon & Devon for six years. As Manager of the Temporary Division, her expertise is in recruiting and placement for contract and temporary assignments for a diverse list of companies. Tara has placed employees in all levels of assignments at the request of clients who may not be ready to hire on a full time basis or require a try-before-you-buy trial period. During the last few years, contract or temporary assignments have become increasingly  attractive to both employees and clients who require more flexibility in the workplace.

Tara received her Bachelor’s Degree in Women’s Studies which initially led her to the non-profit field.  Her non-profit days gave her extensive experiences with coaching and empowering people that she has been able to utilize at Devon & Devon as a recruiter. Tara has a passion for assisting people which is evident to both her clients and her candidates and is a great asset to Devon & Devon.

Lunch will be provided.

The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land and will impact virtually all companies.

The federal government has recently released major regulations and is moving full speed ahead with implementation of the law. It is imperative that companies do the same. Executives in tax, human resources, information technology, and finance need to become familiar with the impending deadlines and develop a comprehensive strategy for addressing key provisions of the law. The Act will affect companies’ benefit designs, workforce composition, reporting systems, tax administration, and bottom line. Failure to understand an employer’s obligations under the Affordable Care Act could result in fines, unforeseen tax liabilities, and reputational risk.

In this presentation, we will present an overview of the Affordable Care Act, including a discussion of the major employer requirements, key effective dates, and what companies need to know in the short- and long-term.

Short You-tube video: Highlights of the Affordable Care Act

Investments in innovative small businesses are one of the critical aspects of economic development and recovery.  Over the past 3-4 years, Orange County has failed to take advantage of the non-dilutive public funds available for early stage capitalization of new companies and, as such, has not capitalized on an opportunity to develop and support our local high technology ecosystem.

OCTANe and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering (HSSoE) have formed a collaborative partnership in an effort to bring more small business innovation research grants to Orange County and the UCI campus. In addition to HSSoE, UCI participation includes faculty from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, School of Biological Sciences, and School of Physical Sciences.

The program will provide a combination of educational sessions and direct coaching and submission support to assist up to six start-up companies to target, create, and submit grant applications for small business innovative research funding and it is expected that a significant number of these will receive this non-dilutive funding.  The funding ultimately is used to build new companies, create jobs, and stimulate the economy.

Greg Washington, Dean of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, William Tang, Associate Dean for Research and professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and OCTANe, a non-profit organization focused on connecting people and ideas with resources and capital to fuel the high technology ecosystem in Orange County will be coordinating the program.

We will kick off with an introductory seminar on 10 April 2013, quickly followed by a “hands-on” workshop for all interested groups that are considering applying for an SBIR or STTR grant.  The aim is to select up to six companies that match well with the expertise available on campus for direct consulting support in targeted agencies and creating grant submissions for the 2013 grant cycle.

Agenda:

4:00 - 4:30pm  Registration and Networking

4:30 - 5:00       “The importance of SBIR’s to the Innovation Economy and the University of CA, Irvine.

5:00 - 5:20       Overview of SBIR/STTR Process and opportunities to secure research funding and    initial seed.

5:20 - 5:40       How SBIR Funding has been used to build and commercialize innovative  technologies.

5:40 - 6:00       SBIR Initiative: Process and Next Steps

Orange County is the single most technology rich epicenter for ophthalmology technology. The purpose of the Orange County Ophthalmology Technology Summit (OCOTS) meeting is to create a local forum where leading ophthalmology technologists, researchers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs can come together to discuss current industry trends, unmet clinical needs, and new business opportunities all to fuel the ophthalmology ecosystem in Orange County, California.

The meeting is sponsored by OCTANe and co-chaired by Dr. Bill Link, Managing Director of Versant Ventures; founder, chairman, and CEO of Chiron Corporation; and the founder and CEO of American Medical Optics (AMO). Our other co-chair is James V. Mazzo, Executive Chair of Acufocus, retired President of AMO. Jim is truly one of the most distinguished ophthalmology executives in Orange County. After 22 years at Allergan, Jim led the spin out of AMO from Allergan and successfully grew the company to more than $1.5 Billion and clear leadership in cataract, eye care, and refractive surgery. Jim is also co-founder of OCTANe, chairman of the UCI Foundation, and a trustee of Chapman University.

The plethora of ophthalmologic technologies that have been born and developed in Orange County by these co-chairs, along with the large group of executives that they have mentored in their respective organizations, is staggering and has shaped the vision world as we know it today.

At the same time, this field remains in a period of explosive technological growth. Huge unmet clinical needs remain and the rate of innovation continues to accelerate. From an entrepreneurial perspective, change brings opportunity.

Lunch and appetizers will be served.
